Windows 7 Is Here!

author posted 10/22/2009

At long last, worse than waiting to open presents on Christmas morning, Windows 7 is here!  To make sure you know all the ins-and-outs of Microsoft's newest operating system, we'll be covering Windows 7 throughout the coming weeks.  From the newest features to the most helpful tips, you'll be able to find it here.  Because I'm sure you probably have a lot of questions, I want to make sure we cover the topics you're most interested in.  Let us know if you have something specific you want explored or answered and we'll be sure to hunt down the answers.

In the meantime, to celebrate the release of Windows 7 and our new line of VAIO PCs, SonyStyle will be hosting interactive events at select locations which includes a chance to win a new touch enabled L Series, special promotions and onsite Microsoft Reps to answer all your questions.  Plus Sukhjit and I will be at the Fashion Valley, San Diego location to cover the event and say hello to our readers.  Jump over to Gina's post on the SonyStyle Blog for all the details, locations and times.

For those that recently purchased a VAIO and are interested in upgrading to Windows 7, be sure to visit the Sony Windows 7 support page to discover if you're eligible for a free upgrade to the new operating system.

Unsure which edition of Windows 7 is best for you?  Curious to know what the minimum PC requirements are for upgrading?  Jump over to Microsoft's site for a snapshot of what's included in each edition.  You can also download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor for a better understanding of whether your PC can run Windows 7 as well as learn about minimum system requirements.  And remember, you can stop by any SonyStyle location anytime to test drive the new operating system for yourself as well as checkout the latest VAIO PCs.

Have you bought Windows 7 yet?  If so, we'd love to hear what your thoughts.  Leave your feedback for our other readers below in addition to any questions you may have and stay tuned for more.

See 1/6/2010 post by YPark: Do not install windows 7 updates! turn off the auto update feature until new service pack is released. i went through 2 machines and 2 hours of tech support to learn this. we executed a sys restore to pre-update configuration, everything worked fine except wireless driver. reinstalled the updated version, everything is running ok. windows....ugh.

I upgraded my SONY VAIO VGN-P598E (the P-Series ultra compact about the size of a business envelope) with Windows 7 (it came with Vista). Upgrade took a rather long time of automatic computer processing, but everything still works and overall, the system is faster than with Vista. If you have spent time organizing a comprehensive set of Internet bookmarks, as I had, be sure to export them to a file from the old operating system, then re-install them onto Windows 7 (Windows Explorer has a dropdown menu next to "Add To Favorites" that allows export/import). As for learning Windows 7, I have used the WIndows 7 for Dummies to good effect. However, it is a monochrome, utilitarian book. A textbook written very well, with lots of sizzle and color, is WIndows 7 QuickSteps by Marty Matthews, published by McGraw Hill. Its eye-catching layout and excellent instruction will inspire you to want to learn Windows 7.
